Those Damn Kobolds

It’s a sunny afternoon in the peaceful town of Blackstone. The workers are toiling in the mines and the blacksmith’s hammers ring endlessly through the crisp autumn air. Suddenly, thunderous hooves pound the floor boards of the covered bridge. A woman’s scream pierces the serenity of the afternoon. Bandits are attacking! The Ironspike Scavengers have come seeking plunder and death.

Korin, Aureo and Carrot run to the aid of the townspeople. They run into the bandit leader who is explaining to Glaegin Hammerclaw that he is looking for a woman by the name of Karela and if he doesn’t find her here then the town is useless and must be burned to the ground. Glaegin, of course, will have none of this and draws his axe. Our three heroes join in the fight and handily defeat the raiding bandits.

That evening, while celebrating their victory, the three heroes meet a man by the name of Elyndel Gylmar at the tavern. He seems to be in a rather sour mood and is spending the last of his coin drinking his sorrows away. They learn that he had been robbed and left for dead by the very mercenaries he hired to see him safely to his destination. All he had left was his great uncle’s family heirloom, a small chest with intricate runes carved across it’s surface. Elyndel continued on his way, intent on delivering his package to his uncle, but then he was set upon by kobolds! They trapped him and stole the chest and again Elyndel was left for dead. He managed to free himself and ended up here in Blackstone.

Elyndel, having witnessed the bandit raid, asks the three men to help him find his family heirloom and restore his name to his family. High off of their victory against the bandits, our heroes readily agree to seek out these kobolds and recover Elyndel’s chest.

The next morning, Korin, Aureo and Carrot venture off to seek out the Kobold Lair. They run across a couple Kobold warriors and defeat them readily. But the three are waylaid when Carrot discovers a hidden crypt. When he entered the cave a door slammed shut and he was cut off from the rest of the party. While the Aureo and Korin fought off some sort of apparition, Carrot destroyed a couple guardian golems and discovered a wonderous greataxe.

Continuing on their way, they soon discover the kobold lair. Inside they set off a few traps, kill a few kobolds and then enter the kobold “throne” room. Here our heroes are surrounded by kobold warriors. While the kobold chieftain spouts something about roasting their hearts over their funeral pyre a troll bursts through the wall! It tosses kobolds like rag dolls across the room and our heroes flee. Korin wants to wait this one out, but after some prodding by Aureo and Carrot, the three decide to take on the troll. With some clever hit and run tactics, the troll is defeated. The three heroes soon find Elyndel’s chest and head back to Blackstone.

However, upon returning to town, they discover that Elyndel has gone missing! Relken Tigg explains that he just up and left in the middle of the night. Curiosity finally got the best of Korin, Aureo and Carrot and they opened the chest. Inside they find a large blue gem, which, of course, they decide to keep and to prevent any suspicion from whoever is pursuing Elyndel, they take the chest out in the woods and burn it. A great green flame erupts from the chest, while howls and wails pierce the night air.

Our three heroes go back to their regular lives the next day with many questions running through their heads. Who was Elyndel running from? What is the mysterious blue gem? And why the hell did they burn that chest?

Engor's Folly

Engor Zulsaran, the resident eccentric wizard of Blackstone, lost control of a summoning experiment. Fire mephits and elementals escaped his wards and wreaked havoc throughout the town, burning half of the warehouses (indluding Blackstone’s winter food stores) and nearly destroying Sternfist’s Smithy before finding they’re way into a mine. Korin, Aureo and Carrot helped to put out the fire and defeat the mephits at the smithy. They then entered the mines to destroy the mephits before they cause more damage. As a last desperate act, the mephits blew up an old barrel of dwarven explosives and collapsed the mine shaft! Our heroes barely escaped with their lives. The people of Blackstone were thankful of the trio and Glaegin Hammerclaw rewarded them with they’re choice items from what was left of his smithy.

Now, however, Blackstone is faced with a desperate situation. Their food stores have been destroyed and winter is coming soon. As the Council of Five debates on what to do, the people of Blackstone call for justice against Engor.

Something in the Deep

It’s been two days since Engor’s Folly. The Council of Five is still deliberating on how to save the town. Engor Zulsaran is restrained under house arrest while Blackstone’s citizens wait nervously at the Rusty Kettle Tavern. They are angry for what Engor has done. A group of drunk miners, lead by a man named Bernard, cry for Engor’s head. They loudly state that the Blackstone needs to restrict the use of magic like The Order of the Blue Stone has done in the nearby town of Tarnwood Falls. Our heroes disagree with Bernard who throws drunken insults they’re way, inciting a full fledged tavern brawl! Glaegin Hammerclaw and the Council soon break it up, but not until after Carrot knocked several men unconscious.

Later that night, Korin and Aureo noticed a man walking toward them. He seems not to notice them and shambles past, unresponsive to any attempt to interact. Korin and Aureo follow the man into the mines where he promptly jumps down a shaft to his death. It is soon discovered that more men have gone missing and many people around town have felt a strange tug at their minds. Arthur Turello orders the mines closed and watched the next night. Unfortunately, this doesn’t prevent more people from going missing, including his own daughter Phaere Turello. Arthur recruits the help of our heroic trio and together they enter the mines.

Soon, they head down a dangerous tunnel where a cave-in separates Arthur from the group. The only way around is to go down a hole marked with a skull with no eye sockets. The trio explore a maze of tunnels, and soon discover the body of Bernard, the man they brawled with the night before at the tavern. Then, they are nearly overwhelmed by a group of barbaric, eyeless, grimlocks. A narrow escape down a slippery slope finds them in the middle of an underground lake.

The lake turns out to be the water source for an ancient underground dwarven mining complex. After a long rest, the trio explore the tunnels looking for a way out. They discover an old chapel to Moradin, a dining hall filled with dire rats and an Otyugh, miner’s quarters and ore storage. They fight off gricks, darkmantles and a choker and are haunted by an unknown presence.

In the mine manager’s office they find a journal written in dwarven and the mine’s manifest detailing a year’s worth of gems and ore mined from the deep. The journal details how the dwarves discovered a huge gem deposit, including a few very strange gems that glowed with an eerie blue light. The dwarves mined more of these gems and made a very good living selling them off to the highest bidders: lords and their ladies, wealthy merchants and even a Magnon chieftain. But soon things started to go wrong in the mine. Cave-ins and deadly accidents began to increase in number. The miners began to act strange, paranoid and even a few murders. Soon the mine was abandoned and the gem mine collapsed. The journal’s entries ended there.

Our heroes meet a grimlock shaman named Sadak who turns out to be the presence haunting them before. The shaman implores them to help destroy “many-mouths”. Sadak explained that many-mouths is in his mind and attempting to take it over. Sadak was doing everything he could to fight off the mental barrage. The heroes must destroy it and save his tribe. Sadak also gives the PCs a cryptic warning: “Beware the Seven Shades of Blue!”

The dwarven complex happened to connect to the rubble of the mine shaft the mephits collapsed a few days before. On top of this rubble, our heroes discover a gibbering mouther, controlling several grimlocks. A fierce battle ensues but our heroes emerged victorious. Within the mouther, they discover another of these mysterious blue gems!

The rubble was easily climbable and the weary trio escaped through the abandoned mine. Once on the surface, they discover that Arthur and Phaere Turello managed to escape the mine on their own (mainly because the DM completely forgot about them while running the game).
